汉语“方便”两个字把老外搞晕 Two Chinese characters fāngbiàn throw a foreigner off
1、吃饭时,一人说去方便一下,老外不解,旁人告诉他"方便"就是:上厕所; At dinner, one guest said he needed to fāngbiàn (literal meaning: go for convenience). The foreigner didn’t get it, and so someone explained: fāngbiàn meansto visit the loo.
2、敬酒时,另一人对老外说,希望下次出国时能给予方便,老外纳闷不敢问; When making a toast, another person said to the foreigner: I hope you will give me somefāngbiàn (literal meaning: some help) when I apply to visit your country. The foreigner was so confused that he didn’t dare to ask why.
3、酒席上,电视台美女主持人提出,在她方便的时候会安排老外做专访。老外愕然:怎么能在你方便的时候?美女主持人说,那在你方便时,我请你吃饭。老外晕倒! At a banquet, a pretty TV hostess suggested that she schedule a special interview with him when she was fāngbiàn (literal meaning: at one’s convenience). The foreigner was at a loss: How can I do it when you are fāngbiàn (visit the loo)? The hostess thus changed her suggestion: Then what about me inviting you to dinner when you are fāngbiàn (at one’s convenience)? The foreigner was totally thrown off.
4、醒来后,美女主持人又对他说,要不你我都方便时,一起坐坐?老外又一次晕倒,再没有醒来。 When he came to, the beautiful TV hostess made another suggestion: Why don’t we meet another time when we are both fāngbiàn (ditto)? And the foreigner fainted away a second time, never to wake up again.
